THE CHALLENGE
Five megatrends were chosen. A sixth emerged from the research itself.
A group of global technology companies — including major players in enterprise technology, industrial systems, and consumer electronics — commissioned a megatrends study with a clear commercial intent: identify large-scale shifts that could backfill the corporate growth pipeline with new strategic opportunities.
What Made This Different
A framework spanning global to individual — with technology almost entirely absent.
The research distinguished between man-made disasters (nuclear incidents, geopolitical risk) and natural disasters (earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis) — examining which had become more prevalent over the past century, which were intensifying, and which were likely to recede.
The Asia-Pacific "ring of fire" emerged as a particular focus given its concentrated exposure to seismic and tsunami risk.

Megatrends Research Program
Designed and ran the research program across five selected megatrends — with disaster management emerging organically as a sixth, unanticipated theme that warranted its own investigation.

Disaster Typology & Trajectory Analysis
Built a framework distinguishing man-made from natural disasters, analyzing historical prevalence, current trajectory, and future likelihood — with particular focus on the Asia-Pacific ring of fire given its seismic and tsunami exposure.

Capability Gap Mapping
Mapped disaster response capability across five levels — global, national, state, city, and individual consumer — identifying where technology companies were present, where they were absent, and where the most significant gaps existed in communication and response infrastructure.

Coalition Formation
Helped the participating technology companies identify where their specific assets and capabilities could address the gaps identified — and began forming a coalition approach bringing together technology providers, government bodies, and communication infrastructure to close the gap between disaster response and consumer-level communication.
